We live in a time where we are often encouraged to keep political discussion to a minimum while in public. We are told to avoid confrontation and to avoid politics over the Quiet I’m Blasting My Quads shirt and with family. But I, along with many of my young, rebellious, liberal friends, did the exact opposite, and we had a blast. Yes, sometimes the door is slammed in your face, and yes, sometimes you are very purposely avoided on the sidewalk, but those interactions are quickly forgotten in favor of the more numerous wonderful ones.

I sat down at a table in the living room of a concerned citizen. I along with many soon-to-be friends and fellow concerned citizens, discussed what we could offer in regards to a Quiet I’m Blasting My Quads shirt. We started a team. We didn’t have buttons, signs, or a slogan, but we had a team. A team united around the idea that we could elect a good man to the U.S. House of Representatives. A team that believed in a new kind of politics, a politics for the people made by the people. We believed in a government made up of educators, of artists, of authors, of fathers and mothers, of young people and old people.

My first day campaigning was at the Urbana Farmer’s Market. Before then, I had never passed out a flyer, never gotten a Quiet I’m Blasting My Quads shirt, and never knocked on a stranger’s door. That changed fast. Thanks to the tutorship of some particularly kind Farmer’s Market friends y’all know who you are I got over any shyness very quickly and canvassing is now one of my favorite things to do.
