The annual Army-Navy football game is one of the most storied rivalries in college sports, and each year, the teams debut special uniforms that pay tribute to historic military achievements. For the 2024 matchup, the undefeated and ranked Army Black Knights will wear a uniform honoring the legendary 101st Airborne Division and its pivotal role at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
Unveiled on November 18, the uniform is designed to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, a defining moment for the Screaming Eagles. Established in 1918, the 101st Airborne earned worldwide acclaim during WWII, from their daring D-Day drops in Normandy to Operation Market Garden across the Netherlands. Their most celebrated campaign came in December 1944, when the division defended Bastogne, Belgium, against a massive German offensive. Despite being ill-equipped and facing harsh winter conditions, the Screaming Eagles held their ground until reinforcements arrived — famously replying “Nuts!” to a German surrender demand, a morale-boosting moment etched into military history.
Army’s black uniform reflects the harsh conditions at Bastogne, featuring a dusting of snow on the shoulder pads and helmet. Helmet symbols pay homage to unit identifiers used by the 101st: clubs for the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment, diamonds for the 501st, hearts for the 502nd, and spades for the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Silver jump wings adorn the front, while the back of the helmet reads “RENDEZVOUS WITH DESTINY,” echoing Maj. Gen. William Lee’s inspiring 1942 speech at the division’s reactivation.
Details continue across the jersey, where typewriter-style text memorializes Brig. Gen. McAuliffe’s iconic “Nuts!” reply. The front displays the Army star with a segmented circle, a “BASTOGNE” nametape, the Screaming Eagle patch, and the American flag, with the star also featured on the snow-dusted gloves — blending history and symbolism with modern athletic style.
The 2024 Army-Navy Game will be played on December 14 at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, promising fans a thrilling matchup that honors both college football tradition and the valor of the 101st Airborne Division.
