BOSTON — Few franchises in sports carry the weight of tradition like the Boston Celtics. But even basketball royalty isn’t immune to the NBA’s annual “City Edition” jersey rollout. This year’s design—featuring a sleek black base with bursts of “Action Green” and subtle weave-pattern side panels—marks the second chapter in a multi-season design story. While last year’s look celebrated the game’s origins in Springfield, Massachusetts, this one leans into evolution and modern flair.
Not every fan is sold. Some say the updated style is a departure from the timeless Celtics aesthetic, while others embrace the fresh twist. But head coach Joe Mazzulla? His review was as understated—and as perfectly “Mazzulla”—as it gets.
Asked before Saturday night’s matchup with the Toronto Raptors if he liked the new uniforms, Mazzulla deadpanned:
“Yeah, they’re nice.”
No smile. No elaboration. Just a polite nod to move the conversation along. Pressed for more specifics, he shrugged:
“Uh, they say Celtics on them.”
It’s classic Mazzulla—laser-focused on basketball, not fashion. Chances are, he didn’t even clock the uniform change until the gear was hanging in the locker room. For him, the only thing that matters is that his players are wearing the name of the team he coaches.
Still, there’s thought behind the threads. According to a Celtics press release, the 2024–2025 City Edition uniform bridges past and future with design callbacks to last year’s set, while debuting the team’s new jersey patch partner, Amica Mutual Insurance. The Celtics will sport the look in select games throughout the season, starting with Saturday’s tilt against Toronto.
For fans, it’s a fresh design to debate. For Joe Mazzulla, it’s just another day on the court.
