WASHINGTON — The 2024 World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, were honored at the White House on Monday in a ceremony hosted by President Donald Trump. The event, held in the East Room with The Commissioner’s Trophy prominently displayed, marked a celebration of the Dodgers’ championship season and a continuation of the tradition of welcoming title-winning teams to the nation’s capital.
Flanked by the entire roster, team owner and chairman Mark Walter, and manager Dave Roberts, Trump praised the Dodgers as “very special and talented people” and congratulated them on what he called a “legendary” season. “What great athletes,” the president remarked, later adding that Roberts was “one of the greatest managers ever to wear the Dodger blue.”
Roberts, in turn, described the visit as “a huge honor that every World Series champion should experience.”
The moment carried added significance for Mookie Betts, who had previously declined a White House visit during Trump’s first term as a member of the Boston Red Sox. This time, he joined his teammates, saying ahead of the ceremony, “It’s important for me to be there with them, to be able to look in the mirror at night and know I did what I felt was best for the Dodgers.”
Trump, who admitted he doesn’t get to watch baseball as often as he’d like, made a point to follow this year’s Fall Classic closely. He also expressed admiration for the sport before inviting Walter to speak. Walter reflected on the team’s achievement, noting it was the Dodgers’ second World Series win since 2020 and only the eighth in franchise history. The season saw nearly four million fans pack Dodger Stadium, with millions more tuning in worldwide — drawn in part by stars like Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Clayton Kershaw.
The ceremony concluded with a symbolic gesture: Kershaw, sidelined during the postseason due to injury, presented Trump with a custom Dodgers jersey bearing the number 47, a nod to Trump’s position as the 47th president of the United States. “Oooh! I like that,” Trump said with a grin.
The Dodgers secured their title in dramatic fashion back in October, edging out the New York Yankees with a 7–6 victory in Game 5 — a win that brought yet another chapter of glory to the storied franchise.
