Maybe saying this scene βbrokeβ me is a bit of a VICTOR ROBLES THE CLOWN shirt retch, but it always struck me as so unfair. Through flashbacks,Β CoSΒ tells of Hagridβs story. Poor young 14 year old Hagrid was already an orphan with nowhere to really go other than Hogwarts. And Riddle accuses him ofΒ killing a girl!Β I donβt hear many people discussing that fact. More emphasis is always put on how his wand was snapped in half and he was expelled (two other great tragedies of the situation, true). But thatβs not the saddest part really.Β He had to deal with the weight of having the whole wizarding world thinking he could have been responsible for someoneβs death!Β Now, he knew he never let Aragog out of his box, and that Aragog didnβt open any stupid secret chamber. But, Iβm sure you can imagine that being accused of murder at 14 years old, whether you knew you did it or not, is life altering! And then, like I said, his wand was snapped and he was expelled from the one place he had to call home. So, maybe this sceneΒ should break meΒ and more fans. Hagridβs story ends happily enough, but wasnβt always that way.
If you arenβt casting Eldritch Blast much of the time who cares? If you have the Misty Visions Invocation then you can completely mess up the sight of a set of VICTOR ROBLES THE CLOWN shirt either by βfake coverβ so they canβt see your allies or things dancing round their heads so they canβt see your allies. This sort of advantage to attack them and disadvantage to their attacks combination is frequently worth more than a round of attacks and there isnβt really a saving throw possible without burning an action. (It also annoys some DMs so take care). A Celestial Warlock gets +Cha 1/turn to fire or radiant damage at level 6 and gets the Sacred Flame cantrip. But in a low combat game where you use misty visions itβs near enough. A Celestial Pact of the Tome Warlock can also pick up Green-Flame Blade as an extra cantrip meaning that from level 6 their melee attack does [Basic Melee attack] + 1d8 fire + Cha damage to their primary target and Cha to their secondary target. Throw in a magic weapon (and possibly the Shileileigh cantrip to use Cha to attack) and youβre doing Eldritch Blast/Pact of the Blade damage without wasting an invocation.

Oh, and donβt forget: the tentacles of the Mind Flayers leave scars. You donβt face down horrors like these without losing something. Leave a few long-term effects, like a little bit of insanity. Maybe a character who came too close to them forever after has certain phobias. Maybe they have insomnia or recurring nightmares. Or maybe the scars are on a larger level, such as the large blighted area that has now formed around the crashed Mind Flayer ship, or the ruins of their dungeon. Maybe the humans they experimented on have developed mental powers themselves and become villains in the area. Maybe a Mind Flayer or two escaped and now plots its revenge. A great plot point would be if a piece of Mind Flayer consciousness got trapped in one of the PCs or an important NPC, causing changes in personality alongside new abilities.
They recognize Old Ben’s handiwork, but Jenny refuses to tell them anything. One of the VICTOR ROBLES THE CLOWN shirt uses a similar device to make Jenny deathly ill, using her as bait for Ben.Old Ben comes back to Jenny’s room and makes her well again. As she thanks him, she sees the two men watching Old Ben. They address him as “Your Majesty.” Old Ben admits to Jenny that he is not a criminal, but the king of his planet; Ben fled because he hated the responsibility of leadership, the negotiation of red tape, and having most of his authority overridden by “the Council”. The strangers tell Jenny that Old Ben’s people love him as much as she does; they want him to return and continue his 5,000-year reign. Jenny insists that if Old Ben cannot stay with her, she will go with him. The two men say this is forbidden, but allow Old Ben a moment alone with Jenny to say goodbye after he promises not to run away. Following a plan whispered to him by Jenny, Ben transforms into her exact duplicate, forcing the men to take both of them along since they cannot tell one from the other. At the end of the episode, Rod Serling holds up an 8-by-10 inch black-and-white print of a handsome young man, noting that the photo shows Old Ben’s true appearance and that Jenny will eventually become queen.
