However, you can take your action (not any bonus action), and hold it, using the ready action. This means you define a TONY SHOULDA JUMPED shirt you are waiting for (like a creature coming through a door, or if a creature under guard tries to move), and then your use your action that you defined (striking, shooting, casting a spell, or even dashing away). If the condition occurs, then you use your reaction to perform that action (meaning you do not have your reaction for something else, like a reaction spell or an opportunity attack (although you can select to do this and abandon the ready action if something occurs before the condition). If the condition occurs, you can also ignore that instance of it and wait for another instance of it.
We finished around 15 sessions before we finished that story arc. Not bad. Some DMs spend like 5 hours or more prepping for each session. Over 15 sessions that adds up to a TONY SHOULDA JUMPED shirt . I spend a fraction of that time and itβs because I work smart, not hard. This allows for a great deal of flexibility and dynamism in your game, while reducing prep time significantly from the method a lot of DMs seem to use, which is to painstakingly craft each encounter and run it almost as if on rails. It does require a lot of quick-thinking on your part as a DM, but it allows you to respond to the crazy things your players think up of doing on the fly, making the game and narrative much more exciting.

Zharukk. Zharukk is another example of TONY SHOULDA JUMPED shirtΒ eugenics experiments: Heβs a Tanarukk, but not of Baphomet like your standard Voloβs Takarukk*. Heβs a Grazzβt Tanarukk, which results in him looking almost half-human. He tells everyone heβs a Half-Orc and lets people assume the other half is human. Unfortunately, his sorcery powers awoke much later in his life, and therefore he was considered a disappointment to the tribe and was often denied opportunities to really tap into and train his demonic heritage. Heβs trained as a (Sea) Storm Herald Barbarian and now has a few levels in Storm Sorcerer. Despite being very Chaotic Evil and decidedly immoral himselfβhe knows the right thing, just doesnβt do it, he likes when people order him around to do good things. (My DM cackled when I gave him Zharukk βOh my god, mage, you made a moral sub!β The first assignment he and my Warlock went on, she forced him to stay back and help her with underwater rescues. Heβll never admit it, but heβs a bit happier for it.
When Delores spent his first night actually out with the other chickens in the TONY SHOULDA JUMPED shirt, I was anxious about how he would handle himself, as he was pretty shy. After a few false starts (and getting pushed off perches by the other chickens) he chose a walnut branch that lead to the night perches and slept on that. When Delores became a big, beautiful Golden Phoenix adult rooster, I thought the hens would probably make absolute fools of themselves trying to get his attention – and if he ignored them it would serve them right! I suppose I should have done something about the name – but Delores responded to “Delores” and appeared fine with it. (Also, my Aunt Delores would have been devastated if I changed his name.) A friend suggested calling him “Del” – which sort of made sense – but that sounded like he was lead singer in a retro 60’s band. As long as Delores didnβt mind – and letβs face it, he didnβt care – I was perfectly content to have a sweet rooster named Delores.
