I learned a lot of dilla style percussion by literally unquantizing and dragging around different spots on my hi hats and kick drums. Parallel comp is really good and also multiband compression on the master just to give it that extra care on the dynamic end. Sound selection is something super slept on in production in general. Take time finding the right sounds and the song will make itself. I fell into a pit where I basically polished turds, I got super good at mixing but my sounds were trash haha, now you can tell I focus on the foundation more and it has gotten me a lot more listens. Overmixing is a common error among artists, be careful squashing your dynamics too much, you don’t want your song to lose it’s energy.
