I grew up in Metro Detroit in a fairly affluent community, so no visible homeless, but went to college Thats What I Do I Drive Combine I Play With Dogs And I Know Things shirt downtown Detroit. I was kind of an asshole in my world view at the time, saying things “uhm if I was homeless I’d just start walking south and not stop” since Detroit was FREEZING in the winter and people were literally dying in church doorways on certain nights.
Then I remember my first visit to Santa Monica and was like “holy fuck, these are the people I would talk about, who just walked to the edge of continent and stopped”. Obviously it’s so much more complex than that. I’ve learned many people lacking housing are proud and will go to great lengths to keep up appearances, not ask for help, etc. Not always the street corner bum who changes location day to day panhandling. Populations of homeless often really on each other for community too, for drugs, watchmen for police, general companionship. It’s hard to just uproot and “start over”. Also why freeing yourself from homelessness is such a challenge too.

He said it wasn’t bad at all. Now if you’re homeless in Minnesota during the winter you’re going to have a hard time surviving. This year it’s been below zero for a couple weeks, was actually -30 last week. Being homeless here could easily kill you. West coast? Not so much.
