Both halves of California are heavily influenced by Spanish and Mexican culture and Team Persephone Shirt times. Aside from place names, Spanish is everywhere. Bilingualism isn’t codified as it is in Quebec, but it is everywhere for practicalities sake as roughly a quarter of the population speaks Spanish. Many Spanish loan words can be found in Californian English, and many people can speak pretty good Spanglish. All of this is much more wide-spread in SoCal, and much more focused in NorCal. This kinda creates the image that NorCal is “whiter”.

Also on the Team Persephone Shirt . Nobody in California says the “I” in (interstate freeway name). But in NorCal it is just “eighty”. In SoCal it would be “the eighty”. The one exception to this is in NorCals often referred to as both “five” and “eye five”. The other weird freeway nomenclature in SoCal is they commonly refer to freeways by their name (freeways are often named for places or in memoriam). NorCal we only use the number. Except for maybe the Nimitz Freeway, but that is mainly used by newscasters. SoCal calls 10 the Santa Monica Freeway and 101 the Santa Ana Freeway. From what I understand, these names are chosen by where they take you when leaving LA.
