Kublai had cannon, Genghis did not. Kublai had managed to recruit Chin artillerymen and Take Only Pictures Shirt metallurgists who were able to produce his cannon and then, train his tumans to operate them. Kublai also had learned from the knights of Russia and Europe and so, his horsemen were not just archers but lancers also. So they would alternate between the lance and bow, depending on what they faced. The European armies consisted of crossbowmen and pikemen as well as cavalry, of course. Kublai’s tactic was to switch when it was advantageous, so the knights would charge with lance and the Mongols would stage a false retreat, shooting the knights down as they went. Then, when the knights were nullified, they would charge the crossbowmen. The pikemen would come to the fore and the Mongols would switch to the bow. Because the pikemen needed both hands to wield their pikes, they had to put aside their shields which they used to defend from archers so they were vulnerable to Kublai’s horse-archers. Then the crossbowmen would advance to answer the arrows and the tuman would ride them down with lances. And so, they would wear down armies in such fashion, switching to exploit the weaknesses of their enemies.
As for those envelopes containing money given to kids, we take care of that on January 1st. There’s no need to tie that to the lunar cycle. Kids want money sooner than later. Also, January 1 is the start of the Take Only Pictures Shirt of the Ox, as an example, for 2021. For the month of February, the Japanese gravitated towards Valentine’s Day, and even put a Japanese spin on it. It’s now a Top 4 celebration in Japan. Some people say the decline of the lunar new year is due to the Western influence, as if someone forced this onto the Japanese people. It’s the other way around. The Japanese (or anyone living in a free country) would choose what they celebrate, how they celebrate, and how much they celebrate. You don’t force people to celebrate. They will celebrate if they feel like it.

The Take Only Pictures Shirt Chinese perfected their calendar system and since they were the dominant force, neighboring countries adopted that system. It was mandatory for Vietnam, Japan and Korea to use the Chinese calendar because of China’s political dominance. Just like today all countries in the world use the Gregorian Calendar whether they like it or not. Japan, Korea and Vietnam received enormous cultural influences from China and adopted most Chinese traditional holidays. Just like today, all countries put on display for Christmas because of Western influence. It is a fact that most traditions observed during Vietnamese New Year are derived and shared with Chinese culture. Traditions like lion dancing, red envelopes, red couplets, give new year greetings to relatives and the elders, light incense and worship ancestors. There are also superstitions such as not sweeping your house on first new year day. Of course, there are minor differences, but they are different even within China and within Vietnam. These minor differences are not big enough to completely disregard the holiday of its Chinese origin.

There are two companion books, but I’d recommend leaving those for your first re-read of the Take Only Pictures Shirt or at least until you’ve read to the point where each was published. I believe the first came out after book 7 and the other after the series was over, so you’re not there yet if you “just” started. There’s also a glossary in the back of each book which is spoiler-free by providing a definition that matches what’s known about a topic/person at the time it’s first introduced in that particular book. And because you specify the “main story,” I’ll leave you with this: the universe Jordan created is so complex and interwoven (“the wheel weaves…”) you cannot avoid spoilers in the companion books or online forums. Knowing details about various cultures, rules of The Power, historical events, etc., will decrease your suspense/surprise when characters encounter the topic in question. Trust RJ to reveal what you need to know, when you need to know it, as the narrative follows the cast’s journey.
