The tradition of bringing a fir tree into the home at Christmas became very popular in Mrs Claus but married to the Grinch shirt and legend says that Martin Luther was the first to put lights (candles) on the tree. There’s a big gap between the eighth century and the sixteenth century that doesn’t well explain how the tradition evolved, but it is during the sixteenth century that various German songs about the tannenbaum became popular and there are records back to 1510 showing the tradition of decorating the tree had spread to Latvia.

German emigrants took the tradition with Mrs Claus but married to the Grinch shirt , to places as far away as America, but the practice largely remained in their communities until 1848, when the London News printed an engraving showing Queen Victoria and her husband Albert, with their tree, in the palace. Victoria was of German descent and reportedly had a small tree in her room, at Christmas, as a child. But that was a fairly private practice. After she and Albert were married, and Albert was having difficulty feeling accepted in his new country (Albert was born and raised in what is now Bavaria, Germany), she told Albert to decorate the palace, at Christmas, in the way he was accustomed.
