This next one isn’t as meaningful, but it brought me and my mom closer together. I currently live in New Mexico, and it’s truly not the hotbed for ice hockey. But I we are in close proximity to some NHL teams, this one being the Arizona Coyotes. My mom’s from New York, so following her routes, I became a New York Rangers fan. For my only Christmas gift when I was 16, my mom gave me an envelope. I was a bit surprised, but I opened it and my jaw dropped. I saw two tickets to the Arizona-New York game coming up within the next few weeks. I was travelling to the Phoenix area for a couple games of my own, but nothing would beat seeing my Rangers play live. I went to the game, and it might as well have been a I’m not just a daddy’s little girl i am a veteran’s daughter t shirt game for New York, every fan was a Rangers one. They got triggered. Their whole worldview where they’re the center of the universe came crashing down. They overreacted. They described it as a religious war. A war on Christmas. They manufactured a false narrative of being under assault. A clash of cultures. Then, foolish people believed it. Wishing little Timmy a birthday?! To arms! To arms! The PC brigade are coming! Protest! Complain! Print newspaper articles! Run segments on television! It expanded and expanded, with none of these people stopping to think for even the second it would have taken, to realize that it was they who were being the word police, or that they didn’t believe their own argument.

Years ago, we got to know a couple, living in LA. Fred’s parents were movie producers and he had traveled, and eaten, all over the world. Denise grew up in Tucson and her mother hated to cook. We had had them for lunch (saltimbocca a la romana and small scallops, poached in a vinaigrette, reduced and served, chilled, with fresh raspberries). She said, “It would sure be nice to make a meal like this for Mr. and Mrs. B”(her in-laws). My wife offered my services. Denise was quite excited and planned it for the following Saturday night, 6:00 sharp, to start cooking. I suggested veal piccata, fresh pasta and sautéed zucchini. The in-laws were delighted and offered to bring the wine. I got daily calls, each more anxious than the last, to make sure all was well. I packed up my gear and we headed out, rather early, as we wanted to stop and visit friends to see their new house. This was the pre-cellphone era, and, in the late afternoon, as we found out later, Denise became convinced that we had forgotten the event. We rang the bell, waited, and finally, Fred answered the door, seemingly startled to see us. “Oh, you’re here”. He let us in and brought poor Denise, tear-stained cheeks, out of the bedroom. Edmonton, Canada like the majority of highly populated locations, has positive attributes and others which many would happily pass on. The difference between a plus or a minus is frequently based on an individual or families preferences and biases. To that end, I’ll try to note unique or out of the ordinary sides of the city. The choice to consider it as an asset or downside rests with each reader. In no particular order: Edmonton has a very lush river valley which includes a scenic drive, walking trails, beautiful parks, etc. There are also swimming pools and golf courses located in the valley. The city is currently adding additional bike lanes to a number of I’m not just a daddy’s little girl i am a veteran’s daughter t shirt in the cyclist’s favourite areas in Edmonton. Drivers are continuing, at this time, to get used to them. Edmonton is not a huge city in and of itself. There are several suburban towns and cities adjacent to her boundaries. These include Sherwood Park, Leduc, Beaumont, Spruce Grove and St Albert. Together they make up the “Capital Region” which comprises more than a million people.

People will talk about the phenomenon of “passing” or giving “benefits of the doubt” and I’m not just a daddy’s little girl i am a veteran’s daughter t shirt there was a lot of default mixing, and “race is a social construct” types of arguments. This obscures actual Native and American history, demographics, intermarriage patterns, and even the element of maintaining tribal affiliation. What does that actually represent? In other words, do these supposed  grandmothers who were supposedly “full blood Cherokee” just spring from thin air and live in White society with no affiliation, far from Cherokee communities, with no links to known Cherokee families? Do people think that Cherokees were just female gnomes, hiding out in the woods, to be found by White male settlers?? Their only legacy is being a vague ancestress that turns out to be someone’s unproven “full blood great-granny?” I think people tend to believe that many Cherokees were kind of scattered about, broadly found in the southeast…but, somehow adrift from actual intact communities that lived in specific locations at different times and places.
