An end to animal cruelty. People have voices and can find advocates but animals often cannot. Cruelty is cruelty whether the Ice Hockey Elf Family Matching Christmas shirt or denizens of puppy mills or sad, hungry and lonely strays. It says a lot about society in general that we’re willing to perpetuate the cruelty involved in mass producing animals for meat, for the damage it does to the planet and the contribution to global warming just to satisfy an appetite. People who are cruel to animals often progress to cruelty to humans. It’s time to take a stand to reduce animal overpopulation and to increase penalties for the people who hurt them. I believe animal abuse is now a felony in some states and I applaud that.

My mother had remarried the Ice Hockey Elf Family Matching Christmas shirt, which necessitated our moving from our home in San Diego to a small township in Pennsylvania. Both my mom and new stepdad were paying off debts they had accumulated before marriage and funds were very tight. I walked a mile to school each day, and the same mile home, and I had no coat. The only sweater that I had was an ill-fitted hand-me-down with large holes in it. I wore it over my clothes to “keep warm.” For those not familiar with climates in various regions in the United States, San Diego has mild weather year-round, but Pennsylvania temperatures fall below freezing in the winter. Snow, ice, and sleet are common and usually stick to the ground for weeks. My dad worked as a pizza delivery guy and often made our grocery bill stretch by bringing home pizzas as allowed by his manager. Most of these, as I recall, were botched orders from the day. I had given up playing with most of my toys almost 2 years before (and passed them down to my sister), but I loved doing arts and crafts, and writing. My sister, who was 7, preferred more active play like roller skating and jump rope. My brother, at 3 years old, enjoyed trains, trucks, hard hats and capes, anything super-hero and anything fire fighter, etc.
