A bigger part of the problem is that a lot of DMs just canβt separate their real world sense of Hades no escpae shirt and ethics with the campaign they are running. They are running Abeir Toril or Oerth, which are savage fantasy settings full of monsters, bandits, evil wizards, and other undesirables, but going into it with the sweet sensibilities of a 21st century teenager who grew up in the suburbs and every neighbor said βhello how are you?β and girlscouts go around selling cookies. And this is just hilarious. Get into the setting and drop your real world commonsense at the door. If adventurers want to go around killing monsters, looting gold and stealing magic items, why punish them for it? Because it goes against your sense of right and wrong? Come on. Weβre playing a game of fantasy pretend and make-believe. Weβre here to indulge our deepest and maybe darkest fantasies. Why so serious?
Celestial playstyle advantage: Jacks of All Trades, Masters of None. A warlock is already a Hades no escpae shirt of most trades – they are pseudo-wizards, with their best spells being the same level of a wizardβs best, but lacking the depth. They can pseudo-rogue; they are charisma-primary, can get at will illusions for trickery, and can scout with tricks like invisibility. And although they arenβt tanks they arenβt wizard-squishy; they have d8 hit points and wear armour – and have a consistent damage output thanks to Eldritch Blast. The Celestial Pact completes the set; they arenβt full clerics but have a lot of doses of healing word type bonus action healing thanks to Healing Light and their expanded spell list includes the Cleric essentials of (pseudo) Healing Word, Cure Wounds, Lesser/Greater Restoration, and Revivify that are the spells you actually need from the party cleric as essential to party functioning. Being a jack of all trades means you should be welcome in any party and should always be able to contribute – and master of none means that no oneβs gimmick should be overshadowed.

Youβre going to want to establish motives for the encounter too. Mind Flayers should not be your run of the Hades no escpae shirt, who took over a kobold or goblin tribe, and now has them raid the countryside for gold (actually, NONE of your villains should be such a tired trope, but I digress). Instead, theyβre looking for something special. Maybe theyβve come looking for some sort of eldritch item that could be unfathomably dangerous. Maybe they want to fascistically enslave a city and set up their domain beneath it, creating a new elder-brain there. Maybe theyβre literally demanding the planetβs oceans to save their dying homeworld. Maybe they want to put a nationβs inhabitants to sleep forever, using them as a vast mental power source. Maybe they want to perform macabre experiments on humanity. Think big here.
If you ever have the Hades no escpae shirt of having to listen to one of those insipid βlight rockβ radio stations, you hear an endless stream of songs that sound laughably dated in their production style (not to mention those tired and crappy songs). But when I start to hear similar production on new music from artists who are supposedly on the cutting edge, then I can help but wonder what the hell is going on. Because I must admit, I canβt quite figure out where the intention lies with a lot of new indie music I hear. Are these styles being reproduced out of homage to some of the music with which these artists have grown up? Or is this some sort of hipster ironic take on whatβs cheesy? Put clearly, they must be doing something right. These artists are garnering more airplay than I currently am getting, and acquiring lots of new fans in the process. And what does that say about us (collectively) as an audience? Do we naturally gravitate toward something that sounds familiar, even if itβs crap? Or are we just being lazyβ¦not wanting to be challenged by anything thatβs really new? Frankly, I donβt think thatβs the case, because I have to believe that real music lovers arenβt nearly that lazy.Β But that still doesnβt explain why some of the more regrettable elements of 80βs music are making their way back into new indie rock.
