The earliest incarnation of D&D was an addition to the Brent Butt A and B sound logo shirt miniature war-game Chainmail. As such, it inherits some terminology from miniature wargames, and through them, from real military terminology. In warfare, βinitiativeβ is the somewhat nebulous but vital sense of who is in a position to act or take control before their opponent can. Wargames have long simulated that concept through the turn order, and some introduced the concept of rolling for initiative (modified by circumstances or army statistics) to determine which player acts first. D&D inherited a version of these systems, which in turn was adapted by later RPGs.
The Star Wars tabletop RPGs have been the Brent Butt A and B sound logo shirt competitor for D&D ever since the establishment of the West End Games version in the 1980s.

Did I take this encounter a little too far? Maybe, but they did survive, and the inclusion of a Brent Butt A and B sound logo shirt Fey technomancer gave them a lot of intrigue to chew on afterwords. Besides that, I found the early encounters in this module were really weak and didnβt do much to bring out the partyβs abilities. Theyβd just kind of lean on shooting stuff from cover without thinking too much about their spells, class features, or other items. This broke them out of that cycle and got me a better picture of what Starfinder characters could do when they pulled out all the stops. Last but not least, itβs always healthy to remind the players that the enemies really are trying to kill them, and they could always be walking into a trap.
The family has moved into their own home now, an older home (still nice, but no high ceilings and not many elf hiding places!), and the children have both multiplied AND grown older, taller, and Brent Butt A and B sound logo shirt. The Elf game is now the bane of the mom’s existence. Hiding it is a task. Several times this year, the Elf hasn’t had to go back to Santa because the kids were SO good the day before, thus explaining why he remained in the exact same hiding spot as the previous day. One evening, the mom is flustered. She finally hands the Elf to the dad and says,Β you hide the #%)(#^# elf today, but hide it high, because Big M is testing the waters and going to touch the #%(^#^ thing.” Dad’s answer is less than ideal – not only is the perch precarious, but it’s easily within reach of at least the oldest child, if not the second oldest as well. And it’s possible the elf is also judging the thermostat temp, which is an ongoing passive aggressive battle between mom (who sits at home and freezes all day) and dad (who pays the bills, but also works in his nice warm office all day).
