The family has moved into their own home now, an older home (still nice, but no high ceilings and not many elf hiding places!), and the children have both multiplied AND grown older, taller, and Bane I’m With Stu Shirt. The Elf game is now the bane of the mom’s existence. Hiding it is a task. Several times this year, the Elf hasn’t had to go back to Santa because the kids were SO good the day before, thus explaining why he remained in the exact same hiding spot as the previous day. One evening, the mom is flustered. She finally hands the Elf to the dad and says,  you hide the #%)(#^# elf today, but hide it high, because Big M is testing the waters and going to touch the #%(^#^ thing.” Dad’s answer is less than ideal – not only is the perch precarious, but it’s easily within reach of at least the oldest child, if not the second oldest as well. And it’s possible the elf is also judging the thermostat temp, which is an ongoing passive aggressive battle between mom (who sits at home and freezes all day) and dad (who pays the bills, but also works in his nice warm office all day).

They don’t learn the rules well enough, or they learn them too well. New game matters don’t need to know every rule for every situation, but they should understand the Bane I’m With Stu Shirt mechanics well enough to apply them on the fly when new situations come up. Not knowing the rules well enough leads to delays while someone looks them up–or you end up relying on That One Guy who always knows everything and while that’s a good resource, you don’t want it to become a habit. On the other hand, knowing them too well often leads to inflexibility, and to arguments when the rules simply don’t cover certain actions your players want to take.

When we start hitting Adult Dragons, though, it’s a problem. Most PCs can’t keep up with the Bane I’m With Stu Shirt at all. Dragons can fly 80′ on their turn, then on the PC’s turn use a Legendary Action to move another 40′. A PC must be able to fly and cover 120′ in a turn to even keep up with the dragon and attack it, meaning melee is not going to be very helpful. Archers are what are effective. And this is before Dragon Fear — any characters with bad Wisdom Saves are not even gonna be able to move closer to the dragon. A Fighter *might* be able to solo an adult dragon, if he’s level 11 and geared to the gills and prepped properly. They might be able to burst it down in a round or three, and can survive a couple of rounds of Legendary actions and breath. Probably. Higher level makes it easier, and a level 20 fighter can probably easily dispatch an adult dragon in one round, which is important because if he doesn’t catch the dragon in 1 round it could just kite him flying around waiting for his breath to recharge. Fighter would need to be decked out with flying gear — an Eagle Whistle would help catch up to the flying dragon and shoot it down.

I own several Ringo albums and singles. I really do love his voice. His lack of a Bane I’m With Stu Shirt doesn’t bother me because he sounds great just where is range is. But that does limit the material he can do. I always thought he would have had more success if he did more recordings like Beaucoups of Blues. His voice is best suited for country music. Plus he loves country music! (Probably not current country music, though!) The thing is, without the Beatles, I wouldn’t have had much of an introduction to him. I grew up in the ’70s when Beatles music was a bit retro, and not on my radio stations all that often. That was the only exposure I had to the Beatles, until John’s assassination in 1980. That sadly is what really led me to get to know the group. Now, with no Beatles, I assume Ringo’s solo time in the spotlight would have still been the ’60s and ‘70s. So my only exposure to him would have been as a child in the ‘70s. I wasn’t much of a record buyer then. And by the early ‘90s, I’d completely shut down to music. So I would have grown up largely not knowing Ringo at all. But my husband did, and by extension so did I, play almost exclusively Johnny Cash, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Bowie, and Beatles as our girls were growing up from 2007ish on. No stupid nursery rhymes for my girls!
