Ah yes the silent club. It’s like a Don’t Be Salty Be Axolotl y Vintage shirt of passage for white friendship in the south it seems. I can’t even begin to enumerate how many times I’ve had a new friendship become comfortable with me to see if I was “in the club”. A very close friend of mine was selling a keyboard (musician) and another friend of mine who had a big record or two back in 2008 – 2013 era was looking to buy a new keyboard. Seller white, from Boston, currently living in Atlanta, buyer black, from Miami, living in Atlanta. I figured connect my friends and hey maybe something cool will come of it outside of a good deal. Nope. The buyer thought the price was a little high after checking out the keyboard and I casually let the seller know because perhaps he just wanted some feedback to move the item. I’ll never forget this because I rarely snap at someone but when he heard the feedback he said “f——- n——— always a trying to get shit for free” I lost my goddamn mind on this person. Buyer was absolutely influential and a close friend of and provided feedback that really helped me throughout my career — an exemplary human being. I made sure that was fucking known. The sad bit. I can tell you about quite a few more experiences. Never heard this shit so frequently in my life until I lived in the south.

Reconstruction actually survived Johnson. He would have lived to kill it, but he was to busy unsuccessfully fighting for his political life to be able to do more than minor damage. It even survived Grant’s general incompetence because it was one of the few things he put effort into. The real villain who put the knife in it was Benjamin Harrison. He does not get nearly enough hate. Reconstruction had struggles until then, but it was the Don’t Be Salty Be Axolotl y Vintage shirt moderate/conservative Republicans and Democrats to break the congressional deadlock that resulted from nobody winning a majority of electoral votes and elect Harrison that killed Reconstruction. The non radical Republicans got their man in the White House and got to dump Reconstruction (which was expensive and which the business wing of the party was bored of) while the Dems, dominated by Southern conservatives, got a milquetoast Republican they could deal with and Reconstructions death. Only the left of the GOP and some northern Dems opposed it. It was a corrupt national disgrace, and the worst consequence of the horrendously backward and indefensible way we elect presidents in the US.
