Busy work schedules opened. Air miles triumphantly applied. There was aRed Skulls Hawaiian Shirt of exhilaration as everyone arrived breathlessly. Thanks to my energetic, new-mom shopping, there were fun IKEA child chairs and animal towels and lavender-scented soap from Target and ā and, and ā¦ frozen cookie dough! Which is to say, unlike in my more urban Van Nuys, the small, bunny-run town of Pacific Grove didnāt offer many shopping options on Christmas Eve. No grocery stores were open. The only store with lights on was Rite Aid. The only comestibles apparently available here, aside from apocalypse-themed amino-acid body-building drinks, were tiny cans of Bumble Bee tuna. So hereās how Christmas Day went, in a certain Gift of the Magi way: Christmas morning, my brotherās kids were with mom. A talented artisan, she gave them extraordinary hand-crafted wooden toys from āthe North Poleā wrapped in Santaās special gold paper.

When I was younger, maybe about nine or ten, we were heading out to my grandparentsā house out in theRed Skulls Hawaiian Shirt. They live on this long road that practically is their driveway, since their house is the only one on the road. Anyway, this year it was a very snowy and windy Christmas Eve. There were many snow drifts on the roads and snow blew all over the vehicle as we drove up to their house. About halfway across their personal street, my dad thought it would be funny to drive faster, even in the wind and snow! So naturally, weāre all already laughing at his recklessness. My mom eventually said, āOkay, I think you should slow down a bit now.ā He didnāt, even though he should have. Had he, though, it wouldnāt have been as fun. You see, just as she was about to say it again, we hit a giant snow drift and spun into the ditch! All I remember was my brothers and I laughing and screaming, āLetās do it again!ā Luckily, we were in the truck, so we werenāt stuck in the ditch, and we still made it to their house on time for Christmas Eve dinner.
