They’re lucky to have double income and full-time work now. To be safe, Tuula belongs to a Mujeres Arriba Shirt union with an unemployment fund and legal services included in the 350€ yearly fee. Matti subscribes to a private unemployment fund for the moment with an annual fee of 150€. (Or the other way around). They won’t have to rely on minimum social security in case of unemployment. At least not right away. They have two cars and two saunas. The family car is a 2013 Volvo station wagon. The second one which they call ‘a shopping bag’ is a 16 year old beat up old clunker. Hey, it still works fine! The upkeep of cars is a significant expense item. Right up there after housing, above food. Housing is expensive. Inflation shot up around year 2000 so Matti was lucky to buy a house just before. Gas and cars are taxed heavily (as well as alcohol and tobacco) to try and push people to use public transportation where possible. Food however is relatively cheap.
The city enjoys four distinct seasons each year. Summer is most often, quite beautiful with long evenings, gorgeous sunsets and very comfortable temperatures, fall gives us the most beautiful golden foliage to view, winter, although very cold, blesses us with scenes one would expect to see on a Christmas card. There are many opportunities to participate in winter sports, and spring. Spring brings a title of the horticultural side of the city. There a number of music and theatre festivals (intended to give something back to the community) which begin to show up Spring weekends. These occur from Spring right through to Fall. Edmontonians have a reputation for supporting publicly sponsored events. We host a number of international sporting events. This gives us many opportunities to volunteer our time to help. We have professional football and hockey teams.

As part of the solstice celebrations, the pagan cultures decorated their homes with greens in anticipation of the spring to come. Evergreen trees remained green during the coldest and darkest days, so they were thought to hold special powers. The Romans also decorated their temples with fir trees during Saturnalia and decorated them with bits of metal. There are even records of the Greeks decorating trees in honor of their gods. Interestingly, the first trees brought into the pagan homes were hung from the ceiling, upside down. The tree tradition we are accustomed to today hails from Northern Europe, where Germanic pagan tribes decorated evergreen trees in worship of the god Woden with candles and dried fruit. The tradition was incorporated into the Christian faith in Germany during the 1500’s. They decorated trees in their homes with sweets, lights, and toys. The giving of gifts at Christmas dates back to the time of Christ’s birth. The relevance of the gift giving tradition on Christmas day is reminiscent and a representation of the tributes that three Magi – who symbolise, according to Christian tradition – gave to the infant Jesus in the manger. The Magi, (there wise men), gave Jesus gold, frankincense and myrrh, when they understood that the baby they were looking at was both human and the son of God. This relevance of the exchanging of a gift to each other at Christmas time was too symbolise and celebrate the Mujeres Arriba Shirt mentioned on Christmas Day. Not what it has turned into today at Christmas.

In the Scottish highlands (mainly) people often speak Scots Gaelic, which is an Indo-European language closely related to Irish Gaelic and less closely to Breton in France and Welsh in Wales and a Mujeres Arriba Shirts. If there is an expression in Scots Gaelic that sounds like “merry Christmas” this probably means that something else has been misheard, or else that a Gaelic speaker used this English-derived greeting in a Gaelic conversation. While I know little about Scots Gaelic spelling, I know that Irish Gaelic gave us names like Conchobor (pronounced, “Connor”), Cúailnge (pronounced Cooley) and Medb (pronounced “Maeve”) so anything sounding like “Merry Christmas” in true Scots Gaelic may well be spelled beginning with B. In the Scottish Lowlands, a form of English has diverged to such an extent from British English that linguists often call it Scottish or Scots. English and Scots are to an extent mutually intelligible, much as Spanish and Italian or Portuguese are. It is more likely that the expression, “Merry Christmas” would be heard in Glasgow among Scots speakers.
For me, A Christmas Story is popular because it recalls an era that I can remember, or at least the era I can remember had not changed that much from the era of the Mujeres Arriba Shirt. For me, that was the late 1950s, though the movie was the late 1940s. I remember the toys that were featured in the movie, such as specifically the train and the BB guns. The movie really captured the magic of Christmas back then for me without becoming sappy about it. Most other Christmas movies don’t have that connection, so I can’t really relate to them, and they don’t really do that much for me. I think that’s what makes it so popular, at least for people of my generation born from about the mid-1940s until the mid-1950s.
