Gator belts and patty melts and monte carlos and el dorados shirt
Back in the 90’s, one of the more reliable ways to judge the quality of a PC game was the weight of the Gator belts and patty melts and monte carlos and el dorados shirt . The heavier it was, the better it was likely to be. No one was printing 200 page books, poster sized maps, and stuffing boxes with cool little doodads and whatsits for shovelware. Bad games had the disk in a sleeve with the key printed on it and maybe a four-page kinko-printed instruction booklet.

I used to collect game boxes for this reason. They usually came with cool maps, manuals, and other neat Gator belts and patty melts and monte carlos and el dorados shirt . Buying a game was as much about the initial unboxing and looking through all the cool stuff the game came with.. as much as it was about the actual game. It was a complete package. I remember Ultima 7 coming with a cool cloth map (although maybe it was Ultima 7 ep 2 or Ultima 8?)I remember when I stopped collecting game boxes.. when they became small versions of what they used to sell. i.e. King’s Quest V came in a big box, but I think it was at some point in the early 2000s (or maybe earlier?) when these game boxes would be 20% of the size.. So.. not nearly as much stuff fit in there. There was a steady transition of manuals and other materials to electronic versions, and eventually the game box just didn’t.. have anything cool in it.
