I had stopped talking to my parents in July. It’s been rough but it was the Im a january girl Im not a one in a million kind of girl I am a one in a lifetime kind of woman shirt. They aren’t the same people anymore. I tried my best to try and get them to turn off the news but it is now their whole personality. They have boycotted disney and football, which were big events and family trips with found memories. They are overtly racist now. What hurts the most is that they don’t really care we aren’t talking, they just don’t want the rest of our extended family to know that their eldest daughter no longer talks to them. Sometimes things are bigger than yourself and bigger than your own feelings. Some people give me a hard time saying “they are your parents, just ignore it” but that makes me part of the problem. Doing nothing and saying nothing, having no consequences for bad behavior contributes to the problem. The heartache I may feel due to cutting off my parents pales in comparison to the heartache they cause others with their words, actions, and beliefs.

I cut ties with my mom’s entire side of the family because they went from casual homophobic racists to Im a january girl Im not a one in a million kind of girl I am a one in a lifetime kind of woman shirt. They’ve been to rallies, posted violent memes online, and do not listen to reason. I tried to keep a civil dialogue going with my 17 year old cousin for a bit, because he’s just a kid and I want to believe that I can help steer him in a better direction. But I finally had to admit defeat when he refuted evidence, continued to strew unsubstantiated claims about nonsense, and commit logical fallacies knowing that they were logical fallacies. Finally I had to cut him out too for my own mental well being. If I spot any relatives in that crowd, you bet I’ll turn them in. Actions have consequences.
