People would understand this a lot better if we stopped using the term “racism” to describe it. People get defensive because it feels accusatory. I’m convinced that if, instead of using loaded words, we started calling this sort of thing “unintended discrimination” or something like that, this would be far less contentious.
The yikes official shirt principle applies to “privilege” which puts the blame on someone and implies that they have an unfair advantage. We should be painting as what it really is – an unfair disadvantage for certain groups. These pretty much mean the same thing but they are received very differently.

yikes official shirt so much! I’m totally convinced a lot of these movements have a PR problem. When you use “attack” language people will naturally be defensive. Even though educated people can remind themselves it’s not intended that way, I think people would be much more supportive if you didn’t start off by sounding like you’re accusing them of things or using wording that invalidates their own struggles
